No company or individual with an online presence is immune to cyber attacks. Cyber attacks are becoming more common and more harmful keeping the need for cyber security talent in high demand with no sign of slowing down in the foreseeable future. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of growth for jobs in information security, engaged in protecting a companys computer systems, is projected at 18% from 2014-2024 thats much faster than the average for all other occupations. Similarly network and systems administrators, which includes many engaged in maintaining a companys computer systems from cyber attacks, is projected at 8% from 2014-2024 thats about as fast as the average for all other occupations. Jobs in technology are already in high demand as it is; adding in the element of security makes these roles even more critical and competitive. To give you some insight into what your recruiting competitors are up to, our Intelligence team analyzed data from the CEB TalentNeuron tool and to see what types of cyber security positions are available and insights into the job seekers that might fit those roles. Common Cyber Security Positions While cyber security is a common function, it is actually not as common to see the term in a job title or job description. In a review of more than 1.2 million jobs which contain either IT security, information security, internet security or cyber just 148,000 incorporated the term cyber of which 33,000 included the term in the job title. Overall the most common titles are Network Engineer, Systems Administrator, Systems Engineer, and Software Engineer. When cyber is within a title or job description, most commonly it is for Cyber Security Analyst, Cyber Security Engineer, and Cyber Threat Intelligence Scientist. Software Engineer, Systems Engineer, Network Engineer, Systems Administrator and Cyber Security Specialist appear frequently as well. According to a 2014 Cybersecurity Professional Trends survey from the SANS Institute, the most common titles are Security Analyst, Security Engineer or Architect, Security/IT Director or Manager, CISO/CSO, Systems Administrator, Network Architect or Engineer, Forensics Investigator, Auditor, Systems Engineer or Integrator, among quite a few other roles. Common skills referenced for cyber security roles are information security, firewall, cyber security, network security, Linux, information assurance, intrusion detection, UNIX, intrusion prevention system, security information/event management, security architecture, penetration testing, application security, transmission control protocol and security engineering. Demand for cyber security talent is highest in the Washington, New York, San Francisco-San Jose, and Baltimore metropolitan areas where industries such as Government, Banking/Finance/Insurance, Technology/Management and Consulting/Professional Services are more prevalent and in need of cyber security talent. Common Cyber Security Professionals In a review of job seekers interested in information security analyst and network and computer systems administrator jobs the most common terms used in a job search were IT, Systems, or System, Administrator, Network Administrator, Information Technology, and Cyber Security. Job searches containing either cyber, information security, cyber security and CISSP are among quite a few searches as well. Not surprising job seekers are also more commonly titled Systems Administrator, Network Administrator, Systems Engineer, and Network Engineer. Many technology professionals have skills related to systems administration, operating systems, network administration, computer security, network security, information/data security, disaster recovery, and internet security.
