How to Skip Work amp; Not Get Caught Ferris Buellers Day Off

How to Skip Work amp; Not Get Caught Ferris Bueller's Day Off To celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” the landmark 1986 John Hughes-Matthew Broderick movie, a group of rabid fans has organized the Ferris Fest to take over parts of Chicago and the surrounding area this weekend, May 20 to 22. There will be special screenings of the movie and QAs with some of the film’s stars like Jonathan Schmock, who plays the snooty maître D, as well as bus tours of filming locations and a live re-creation of the parade scene in downtown Chicago. A handful of Chicago hotels are hosting special Ferris Bueller packages as well, complete with tickets to the Art Institute of Chicago (visited by Ferris in the movie) and even dinner reservations held under the name Abe Froman (if you don’t get this reference, you’re not a fan). But you don’t necessarily need to be in Chicago or call in sick this week in order to celebrate the spirit of Ferris, patron saint of skipping school and living in the moment. With a little clever planning, anyone can follow Ferris’s lead and have your own adventurous secret day offâ€"hopefully, without getting caught. Here’s a guide for channeling your inner Ferris. Watch the movie (again). The film is not currently available for streaming on Netflix, but can be watched online by Amazon Prime members via Prime Video. You can also rent or buy it outright from Amazon and Google Play. And if you want to go old schoolâ€"which would be totally appropriateâ€"borrow a copy on DVD (or perhaps even on VHS!) from your local library. Do whatever you have to do to refresh your memory of the movie and get inspired by all of Ferris and Cameron’s shenanigans. Pick a day to play hooky. Assuming you’re not a high school kid like Ferris, you’ll have to fool your boss rather than your parents in order to get an unauthorized day off. In terms of what day to choose, Friday is generally considered the bestâ€"instant three-day weekend!â€"but also the most suspicious. Calling in sick on Monday can also raise the eyes of skeptics for the same reason. So picking a day in the middle of the week might be wisest if you’re concerned about drawing too much attention. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with simply telling your company you’re taking an official vacation or personal day. In fact, some firms endorse the idea of “me time” away from the jobâ€"one nonprofit even refers to mental health days as “Ferris Bueller Days” according to the Wall Street Journal. Granted, taking the day off on the level is probably antithetical to the Ferris Bueller ethos. But it’s better than getting fired. Read Next: Vote: What’s The Best Money Movie Of All Time? Come up with a good excuse. Ferris fakes illness to skip school, and most workers immediately think of “calling in sick” as the go-to way to get out of work. But calling in sick can be tricky. Depending on what you claimed to be suffering from, you may have to field lots of questions about the details of your malady, and also may be expected to still look somewhat under the weather when returning to work. The point is: Choose your fake illness carefully, and be prepared for the consequences. It doesn’t look good when you say you had the flu and come back to work looking healthy as can beâ€"and with a tan that mysteriously wasn’t present when you last showed your face. A migraine is a pretty safe bet, with few tell-tale symptoms. To fake a bad headache, just furrow your brow and look annoyed, which probably won’t be a problem because you’ll be back in the office. But don’t limit yourself strictly to calling in sick. There are plenty of other believable excuses to get out of work that require minimal effort and imagination, including jury duty and car trouble. Just don’t be dumb and claim you’ve got jury duty like seven days in the same month. And avoid the kinds of absurd excuses for missing work gathered annually by CareerBuilder, like getting stuck under the bed or going to the beach because the doctor said you need more vitamin D. Avoid social media. For some people, this may be nearly impossible. What’s the point of ditching work and having a super fun day if you can’t brag about it on social media? But posting about your adventures on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter at a time you’re supposed to be barely conscious on the couch with a stomach bug is an incredibly easy way to get busted. And yes, people can and do get fired for posting on Facebook on the day they called in sickâ€"millennials especially, as they’re the ones most likely to update their status without thinking about the consequences. Recruit a buddy. Obviously, you’ll want to share this secret day with someone whose company you enjoy, and who can (duh) keep a secret. Playing hooky with a spouse or significant other can be wonderful, though it could increase the chances of you getting caught if, say, word somehow hits the office that both of you called in sick on the same day. For added fun, consider prank-calling each other’s bosses, or some of your friends stuck at work, using your best impression of Cameron when he calls up Principal Rooney. Gear up. Here’s a Gordie Howe Red Wings jersey like the one Cameron wears in the movie. For a leopard vest like Ferris’s, check out eBay, etsy, or Amazon. Top-to-bottom Ferris Bueller Halloween costumes are also sold online, and it doesn’t take too much creativity to put together full Cameron and Sloane outfits as well. Everybody needs sunglasses too, of course. “Borrow” a sweet sports car. So you might not be able to get behind the wheel of a Ferrari like Ferris and Cameron do. Still, there are plenty of services that’ll rent you your dream car for the day, at prices cheaper than you’d imagine. Read Next: Help Us Name the Best Money Movie of All Time Bone up on Ferris trivia. This Mental Floss story is loaded with fun facts about the movie, like that the “Ferrari” driven (and destroyed) in the film wasn’t a real Ferrari (they used replicas), and that there was a reason why Cameron wears the Gordie Howe jersey mentioned above (director John Hughes was a huge Red Wings fan). Crackpot theorists will enjoy this Cracked video about why “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is secretly terrifying, including the idea that Ferris could very well be an abusive sociopath. The “Fight Club Theory” of the movie, meanwhile, holds that Ferris never really existed, and instead is just a figment of Cameron’s imagination. All good conversation points when partaking of your own Ferris Bueller day. [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-_TFm3zb_kw=640h=360] Dine at a swanky restaurant. If you can keep a straight face while pretending you’re Abe Froman (“The Sausage King of Chicago”) and strong-arming a maître d’ at a fancy restaurant into giving you a table, more power to you. Other Ferris wannabes might consider using an app like Open Table or Table 8 for making last-minute reservations. Be aware that these services can come with steep fees, however. Periodically play that “Oh Yeah” song. That “Chickah-chickah! Oooooh Yeah!” song, which is sprinkled throughout the movie and is titled (yep) “Oh Yeah,” can be purchased at Google Play, Amazon or iTunes. Download and play it during the interludes of your day’s adventures. Have fun. In the movie they go to a baseball game and a museum, swim in a pool and star in a parade, among other things. It’s your call what you do on your Ferris Bueller Day, but do make sure it’s fun. Above all, take Ferris’s words of wisdom to heart: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” And maybe don’t plan too much. Ferris wouldn’t approve of a day that completely lacks spontaneity.

Job Seekers Never Do This On Mondays - Work It Daily

Job Seekers Never Do This On Mondays - Work It Daily There is one rule I always tell job seekers about job search activities on a Monday: Never, I mean never, call to check the status of your application, or where the hiring manager is in the decision-making process for a job on a Monday. Here Is Why... Mondays are the least popular day of the work week. Even the most cheerful of workers struggles to get in the groove on a Monday. Given 84% of Americans surveyed last year said they would like a new job, it’s safe to say the majority of people are not in the best mood. Adding stress or pressure to their day is not going to help you. So, as much as you are dying to know where you stand, I would suggest waiting until later in the week for several reasons: If the hiring manager hasn’t made any progress, they will not appreciate you reminding them. If you are not in the running, they will not be thrilled about having to give you the bad news. If they are super busy and planned to address the hiring process later in the week, they will not appreciate you trying to push them to address it sooner. Ironically, all that can change on a Tuesday when they are organized for the week and back in the productivity zone. Why? I do not know, but trust me when I say job seekers should spend Mondays researching companies and identifying who they want to network with. Save the actually calling for Tuesdays and you will see people will be in better moods and respond to you more positively. Now you know to never do this on Mondays. SAPs D&I Officer On Why Diversity In The Workplace Isnt Enough

SAPs D&I Officer On Why Diversity In The Workplace Isnt Enough When Anka Wittenberg joined SAP six years ago as Chief Diversity t merely making the next move in her career. She had a larger goal in mind I said, I would like to make a difference here in German-based companies to ensure the way we look at diversity is clearly from a geschftsleben point of view, she recalled during a recent conversation with Fairygodboss. Thats why I applied. Wittenberg has done just that. In May 2011, SAP made a public commitment to increase the number of women it has in management positions the goal was to get from 18% to 25% by the end of 2017. The company, which employs 89,000 people worldwide, recently achieved this goal six months ahead of schedule and has now committed to growing that percentage each year so that management is 30% women by 2022. Why are we doing it? Because now we all know that business is a lot mora sustainable and successful if you have diverse teams, Wittenberg told Fairygodb oss. We understand ur customers better and it drives employee engagement, she said, adding that the company is focused elend only on gender diversity but also on generational diversity, as well as better integrating the LGBT community, refugees, and people with disabilities, among other marginalized groups. Of course, bringing diversity and inclusion goals to fruition is easier said than done. It can be hard to stay focused on long term objectives, and its not always easy to know what strategies will be effective. But heres how Wittenberg is making it work at SAPBy getting the business buy-inGetting top executives on board is key to advancing any initiative in the workplace. Thats why Wittenberg and her colleagues spent many hours mining data before devising and presenting their plan for getting more women into management. We identified key areas where we need to dive deeper and shared all of our findings. We have clearly worked on the business case, she said, specifically citing De loitte and McKinsey as being useful resources in making their case. By focusing on inclusivenessIn a recent TLNT article, Wittenberg explained that for SAP, the mission was never about the numbers to reflect diversity but rather the desire to create a culture of inclusion. As she puts it, SAP wants individuals to feel like they can be their authentic self while at work, because this is what drives innovation. She recalled that one of the first Diversity and Inclusion training sessions she attended was very much focused on women and how they can negotiate like a man or dress like a man, or what body language they should use to be successful. Thats what we dont want, she said. We want the individual to be there and to show their strengths. Thats what drives innovation and employees. Wittenberg cited Deloittes maturity model for diversity and inclusion, which helps companies focus on various grades of diversity compliance-focused diversity, programmatic-focused diversity, and then, at the top, an inclusive culture in which ownership is clearly with everyone in the company, and inclusiveness is becoming part of the need and DNA of the company. By focusing on KPIsTo remain on track when working toward long-term goals, its crucial to not only clearly identify those goals at the outset but also to make them measureable by consistently focusing on KPIs. What gets measured gets done, Wittenberg said, adding that its been really important to implement measurable goals to create an environment of transparency, which helps establish momentum. Once a goal is reached, celebrate it. What does this kind of transparency look like? At SAP, theres a Diversity Were very transparent with numbers about women in management you can see it by region, Wittenberg explained. This clearly helps to ensure that the momentum is there on sustainable long-term goals. By proactively addressing unconscious biasYou may be hesitant to admit it, but chances are youve made a decision at some poin t in your life thats been affected by unconscious bias. In the workplace, these biases can be particularly dangerous. In fact, a recent Fairygodboss study shows just how rampant bias is in the interviewing process.Thats why SAP is tackling this issue head on. What can we do to make bias more visible? Wittenberg asked. We want to ensure we have a business beyond bias. Business leaders make the best business decision when they eliminate bias. She explained that SAP focuses on hiring the best talent for the job. We dont want to say, you need to hire a woman. We want to say, you hire the best talent. Of course, Wittenberg explained, that entails making sure that the best talent is visible and that the best talent applies to the position. This means not only addressing employees behavior, but also identifying and correcting more subtle forms of unconscious bias, like gender-biased language. Sometimes were formulating a job profile or posting that is not attractive to a woman, Wittenberg explained. If we have a job posting and write words in there like, were looking for someone who is assertive or politically savvy, these kinds of words arent very attractive sometimes to female leaders. They want to have a purpose, but they probably dont want to play political games. SAP uses a recruiting product that scans through its job postings and identifies any gender-biased language.By getting EDGE-certified SAP went through the EDGE Certification process, which assesses companies using a particular methodology to help ensure a more equal and supportive workplace for all. Wittenberg said this process helped SAP evaluate how it recruits and promotes employees, and how employees view the company and their experiences. What comes out is a clear action plan, Wittenberg explained, adding that SAP piloted the program in North America and then rolled it out globally, in China, Germany, and Brazil, among other countries. We got certified by the end of 2016, and we now have clear act ion items to ensure that we get better, she said. This is something that has clearly shown us, using HR analytics, where our blind spots are and what we need to do. SAP will be recertified in 2018 to ensure that its continually making moves in the right direction.

Then and Now How The Hiring Process Has Changed

Then and Now How The Hiring Process Has ChangedThe hiring process has transformed dramatically over the years, in large parte due to technological advancements. Beyond just the rise of the internet, tools like video bewerberinterviewing and interview scheduling software have helped to streamline the hiring process, saving both time and money and making a hiring managers life much easier. But there are some other, mora subtle differences between how people acquire talent now versus a decade ago. Here is how the hiring process has shifted over timeYour reach is much more expansiveBefore social media and the internet, a rolle looking to expand their team had to hope that a qualified professional saw their job posting in the local newspaper or a trade magazine. Their reach welches fairly limited when it came to recruiting, and hiring managers often found they were talking to the same candidates over and over when it came time to fill a job or worse, choosing less-than-qualified individu als for open roles, simply because they had no one else available to them. The internet has truly revolutionized recruiting. There are so many more touch points available to a hiring manager looking to fill an open role. From LinkedIn to your companys website to Twitter, Facebook networking groups, and beyond, its never been easier to access a deep pool of qualified candidates. In some ways this might feel overwhelming, as it means youre sorting through more resumes than ever before, but it also greatly increases your chances of finding someone whos the perfect fit for the role in question. If you dont like the applications youre getting from those in your immediate area, you can go beyond your city and even your state until you find the ideal candidate.Drastic improvements in video interviewing technologyVideo interviewing has become a dramatic time and money saver for those looking to hire. Instead of having to fly a candidate in for an interview or rely on the phone to get a sense of what this person is all about, the hiring manager can now utilize video interviewing technology in their process. This enables them to hear and see what the professional is all about without having to pay for airfare and hotel costs. Additionally, video interviewing technology itself has become much more accessible since it first became available. What was once a high-priced system with fuzzy video and audio quality is now affordable for businesses of all sizes. The quality of technology is much better now too, meaning you can clearly see and hear the individual on the other end of the system without worrying about the system dropping out every few minutes. Its much easier to schedule interviewsIn years past, hiring managers had to engage in a constant back and forth with candidates as they tried to find a time to bring them in for an interview. This became a time-consuming and tedious process, often resulting in frustration for both parties. Throw in time zone differences and th e task became a nightmare, often deterring hiring managers from opting to work with candidates outside a close radius. Thanks to the arrival of interview scheduling software on the scene, a hiring manager now is able to take the legwork out of bringing a professional in for an interview. This enables them to shift their attention to preparing for the interview and making the best hiring choice possible for the business. Thanks to new HRtech, scheduling a jobinterview is a breeze.Click To TweetAn increased focus on cultural fitSeveral decades ago, most people who were in search of a job zeroed in on open positions that offered the highest salaries, best health benefits, and most time off. They werent overly preoccupied with what their new colleagues would be like, or what their work-life balance would look like. On the flip side, hiring managers were very focused on an individuals resume. What sort of schooling did they have? Had they won any awards? How much experience did they have in the field? What were their technical qualifications? These details were what determined whether someone would get offered a job at that company. Personality type and cultural fit played a miniscule part in the final decision. This perspective has shifted entirely, and in 2017 both job seekers and hiring managers approach open jobs with new priorities. Of course those looking for career advancement care about salary, benefits, and time off. They want to ensure theyll be compensated fairly for their time and treated well, should they accept an offer. However, job seekers have also taken a deep interest in what that company is like as a whole. What are the current employees like? What values matter most to upper management? How are problems solved? Is it a collaborative office or is individual problem solving valued? Do they allow team members to work from home? How is work delegated? These questions are all worth considering, in addition to the basics about pay and time off. From a h iring managers perspective, experience and education matter, but theyre also taking a deeper look at who that candidate is as an individual. Those in charge of hiring have realized you can have the most qualified and experienced candidate available, but if this persons attitude is going to cause tension among clients or with veteran employees, its probably best to look elsewhere when hiring. They need to be in search of someone who will add to the team in a positive way, not just someone who is competent enough to get the job done. One person directly contributes to the morale of the entire company, so choosing someone who will fit in well is essential. Technical skill can be taught, the right outlook simply cant be.Candidates run the showToday, job seeking has become much more tailored to the candidates experience, particularly when a hiring manager is vying for top tier talent. Hiring managers have realized that if you want the attention of a valuable would-be employee, you cant m ake them bend over backwards to move through your hiring process. This is why allowing them to do a video interview when its conducive to their schedule has become a popular option. Instead of forcing a candidate to take time off from work or make up an excuse about why theyre stepping out of the office for two hours, theyre able to record an interview from the comfort of their own home at a time that works for them. This shows that the hiring manager respects their time and sends a subtle signal about what it would be like to work for that company.Additionally, many hiring managers have become focused on moving through the talent acquisition process as quickly as possible. They also understand the importance of keeping all candidates informed as they go. Years ago, you could wait months to hear back about whether you landed a second or third round interview. If you didnt get the job, you might never find out about it at all. This put your job search process into a constant, frustra ting limbo. Now, people tasked with hiring realize the importance of being transparent with applicants. They want to find the best candidate for the open role as quickly as possible, and when that person is selected, they understand they owe those who werent chosen the courtesy of an email or phone call so they can continue on with their job search. Its a candidate-driven job market they want video jobinterviewsClick To TweetTheres a greater emphasis on employer brandingWith the rise of the internet, its become easier than ever for job seekers to gather information about the companies to which theyre applying. What kinds of clients does this company typically work with? Based on pictures, blog posts, tweets, and homepage content, what kind of atmosphere does the office seem to exude? This is something hiring managers must constantly be mindful of, and work to monitor. Your online presence can either attract or deter talent, so make sure youre using these resources wisely. Everyone w ithin the company, especially those tasked with interfacing with the public on behalf of the business, should be aware of the organizations vision and values. If youre a creative firm, use social media and your website to show off that creativity and attract job seekers who want to be in a place where their ideas are allowed to blossom. If youre a business with plenty of structure, use your online content to make this clear so you can recruit people who value this stability. As a hiring manager, you may wonder why you pay an individual to monitor your companys social media or write blog posts for the businesss website, but all of these touch points act as powerful recruiting tools and become essential when its time to hire. You want to make sure your messaging is consistent across all platforms, and that its properly reflecting what the company is all about so youre attracting the right type of job seeker.Networking happens in many different placesIn the pre-internet era, networking happened at stiff post-work events with bad hors doeuvres and watered down drinks. If you werent present at these events, you were missing out on your chance to meet the most promising group of young professionals your city had to offer. Now, thanks to sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, and even Facebook and Instagram, networking has taken on a completely different feel. It can happen anytime and anywhere, and has become a much more casual concept. While there are certainly still structured events for people to mix and mingle, its become less about buttoning your shirt and grabbing your stack of business cards and more about starting an earnest dialogue with professionals with shared interests and common goals. You might find your next great hire in a Facebook group, via the comments section on LinkedIn, or in a Twitter chat. As an added bonus, youre no longer limited to those who are within driving distance of the networking event in your city. Youre now easily able to meet people from all different places and walks of life. The networking possibilities are endless thanks to techClick To TweetThe kind of employee hiring managers want has changedRegardless of the industry youre in, hiring managers are realizing just how rapidly business is changing. The way you operated 10 years ago is probably drastically different than the way things work now, and will almost certainly be nothing like the way things happen in six or seven years. As a result, the type of employee theyre looking to hire has shifted, too. Technical skills matter. The right personality type is important. However, hiring managers also want to know that the individuals theyre recruiting are able to pivot, learn new skills, and adapt to a changing business environment. They need to be open to learning new technology and new ways of reaching their customers. Those who insist on sticking with the same old way things have always been done just because its comfortable will plateau and, eventually, get left i n the dust. This is important for those seeking new career opportunities to bear in mind.Theres a greater focus on data and analyticsHiring managers have started to realize they can use data to pick up on patterns and predict future success when it comes to expanding their team. They can look at everything from the responses a person gave during their video interview to the type of training they had as they got acclimated to their educational background and use these pieces of information to predict which candidates will be successful in the future. Instead of guessing the type of individual who will make the best addition to the team and hoping theyre right, hiring managers have come to rely heavily on facts and figures to guide their choices as they pertain to talent acquisition.Technological advancements have allowed the talent acquisition process to become much more streamlined and pleasant for both hiring managers and job seekers alike. An increase in available data has also en abled it to become a more accurate process as a whole. Video interviewing and scheduling software enable hiring managers to save both time and money, and social media has become a powerful networking and branding tool for professionals from all industries. With such drastic advancements in a relatively short amount of time, its exciting to think about how far the process will move forward in the next decade or two. What to learn more about the evolution of the job interview?
